Fall Memories
September, 2026
Dear Mom,
It is almost fall and I have been thinking of happy memories from my childhood during that season. Our lives were much simpler then. I loved how you took us to parks to run and play, to enjoy the crisp fall air and the beauty of the changing leaves. I enjoyed walking to school and seeing how the colors evolved every day.
We always took Sunday drives out into the country. New England is known for its beauty, but honestly northern Ohio is similar, with so many maples and brilliant fall colors. Every Sunday you would pack a lunch in the cooler and off we would go. I loved looking out the window as we drove. There was always such a sense of peace driving slowly along back roads just enjoying nature. I have no doubt it is why I love to walk and be by the water, just relishing the quiet and feeling relaxed.
On Saturdays, I had fun raking leaves with Dad. No noisy leaf blowers back then—just families working together outside to keep their properties tidy. I loved riding my bike and roller skating after school as well. I am very grateful that we, as kids, could enjoy exercise, fresh air and fun after school, with no pressure to win at any sport.
It was an easier, quieter life back then, and it taught me that we do not have to race or win. Life is about family and friends, fresh air and beauty. It is sometimes difficult not to get caught up in the rush of 2026, where we feel obliged to do too many things. Being in nature makes me stop to breathe deeply and feel gratitude for the world around me—the people, the beauty, the kind acts.
You taught me to appreciate these things and to help people in whatever way I can. I am very thankful for those lessons. I love you, Mom. You were a great role model.
Love,
Helen
