Mother’s Day, 2025

Dear Mom,

Happpy Mother’s Day! I am deeply grateful for your presence in my life, both while on earth and now, wherever you may be. I know that you are with me, guiding me and helping me in subtle ways, that I probably do not even realize. Thank you.

The last time I saw you in person was on Mother’s Day on 1992, when you drove all the way from Cleveland to be with me. I was so excited because I was pregnant and could share that with you. Then I lost that baby a few weeks later.

We talked briefly on July 5 just before my family and I headed to Spain. It never in a million years occurred to me that would be our last conversation. I would have lingered longer.

As I look back on our last conversation, I think you knew you would not be here much longer. As we sat at the kitchen table, you said everything was in order. I did not even understand, until after you died, that you meant you had everything set for us, all of your papers and finances, so Charlie could work with the lawyer and execute your estate. You told me to watch over my brother, which I diligently did until his death.

Then suddently you were gone. Gone!!! Never to be seen again on this earth. I miss you so much, Mom, especially on this day. Yet I will do what you taught me to do. I will focus on the blessing of my own family, and the myriad gifts in my life. Thank you for that invaluable lesson.

When I was at Aunt Helen’s funeral, my cousin gave me a letter you had written to your sister many years ago. To read your words and see your handwriting was an incredible gift. It felt as though you were right there with us all celebrating the life of your beloved sister. Thank you for that. I love you.

Love,
Helen
