My First Grandchild

April, 2026

Dear Mom,

I am a grandma!!! I am THRILLED!!! I have always adored babies and little children, loved my own two dearly, and finally enjoy the extraordinary blessing of having a grandson. Now I now how you felt when Sara was born.

Since Fred and I did not know the sex of our first baby, you knit a precious tiny yellow sweater that Sara wore home from the hospital. As I was packing for Colorado, I suddenly remembered that gift and tucked it into my suitcase. Sam wore it home from the hospital. Even though you have been gone for many, many years, you were right there with your great grandson, weren’t you?

Seeing your own child hold and nurture the next generation is an incredible opportunity to see how the circle of life continues in its own beautiful way. Sara and Doug are devoted parents and Sam is a lucky little boy.

I was very fortunate to spend nearly an hour/day with Sam on a pillow on my lap so we could look each other in the eye. Of course, I spoke to him in Spanish from the start, always telling him in a soft and gentle voice how much we loved him. I had such fun singing and talking with him. He was very responsive, although clearly he had no idea what I was saying! That did not matter. I know he knew we all loved him, and that is what babies need the most.

I am deeply grateful that you could come when Sara was born and stay awhile to help me and to bond with her. I am equally grateful that I could come to help Sara and begin a long and loving bond with Sam.

I wish we did not live so far, but I know that you are watching over them in every moment and sharing your boundless love with Sam. Thank you!

Love,
Helen
